The technology surrounding Augmented Reality (AR) is changing rapidly and is becoming increasingly accessible. This means that it is also becoming easier for the layman to use this – previously very complicated – technology. We expect that Augmented Reality will increasingly prove itself in the business field, both through using glasses or a mobile phone with AR Application† So time for a blog.

One of the topics where we see enormous added value for Augmented Reality is in e-learning† Not by simply translating a PDF into online content, of course, as is often the case now, but by realizing a full AR training.

This way you make participants more involved in a training and it makes information more accessible and understandable. We call it AR-Learning and list 9 benefits for you.

Information is more accessible

98% of people between 12 and 45 years old use a telephone in 2017 (CBS, 2018). This means that almost everyone nowadays is used to being able to search and find all information easily. However, this is still lagging behind in education. One still has to search for everything in books or PDFs the old-fashioned way, and all the visual material is static. With Augmented Reality, information can be displayed immediately when a voice command is given. With practical assignments, for example, this makes a huge difference. You do not have to take your attention away from your practical and can immediately see the necessary information as a layer about your work environment.

Examples become clearer

With Augmented Reality, explanations become clearer because everything can be shown visually. The static images used in education today are turning into 3D models floating in the middle of the room. For example, with a beating heart, it can also be 'cut' in half, so that you can see the inside of an aorta. This makes it a lot easier for the teachers to explain the image, as his explanation is supported visually in a way that was not possible before.

It makes the lessons more interesting

Especially now that the technology has not yet fully penetrated the consumer, people find it extremely interesting to work with Augmented Reality. It therefore takes them little effort to keep their attention on the lesson, which makes it easier to store the lesson material. In the future, this will probably only intensify as the technology is still developing strongly.

It makes dust easier to store

The more engagement there is with a lesson, the more of the lesson material is stored. For example, you remember more when you discuss a topic than when you just read. When you watch a video about something, you often remember it more than when you read it from a book. Augmented reality takes this one step further. Because the student interacts with the lesson material, it makes it easier to store the material.

Neurons that fire together, wire together

There is a connection between neuroscience and Augmented Reality; Neurons that fire together, wire together. Simply put, this means that we make associations between different pieces of information when they come to us at the same time. In practice this can mean adding information to objects in the environment. When learning a language, for example, an association is made between an object and the word.

Learning by doing it, without doing it.

You learn best by doing. However, it is not always desirable to learn it by doing. With Augmented Reality you can show a very vivid simulation that allows students to learn it in practice, without endangering patients or expensive parts. See an example of learning by doing with AR . here.

Expensive purchase is cheap

The use of simulations saves costs on physical objects that are needed in some lessons. AR learning is therefore an investment that often pays for itself.

Offer location independent training

By using simulations, training courses can be offered location independently. You do not have to bring objects with you, but the students can learn via software at their own location. The environment does not have to be taken into account either.

Old-fashioned, physical environments are not adaptable interactions

Old-fashioned simulations required huge devices that were not adaptable to the situation. This is of course different with AR simulations. With another program you have a completely different simulation and it is therefore not necessary to adjust the entire environment.

In practice

Inside Heart

A good example of the applications of AR learning is the Hololens application 'Inside Heart'. This application projects a beating heart into space which then starts showing heart complaints. The heart can be 'popped open' whereby the inside of the aorta can also be seen. This allows the students to see exactly what a heart does in the event of a heart attack, without a human heart being involved.
